Agua Pura / Pura Vida

Itinerary

Day 1:  Arrive in Costa Rica (D)

Welcome to Costa Rica.  Your Esprit guides will meet you at the San Jose International Airport (SJO) at 1600h for our transfer to Pozo Azul Safari Lodge in La Virgin de Sarapiqui.  It is a picturesque 2 hour drive through the hillsides surrounding the Poas Volcano.  The steep slopes are famous for its coffee growing and the drive affords great views of the local countryside.  Upon arrival at our "Pozo Azul Rainforest Lodge" we will settle into our accomodations, enjoy a welcome drink and dinner.

Day 2:  Whitewater Canoeing/Kayaking Instruction on the Lower Sarapiqui (B,L,D)

Try your hand at whitewater canoeing/kayaking or both!  We get you suited up and provide world class instruction on the lower section of the Rio Sarapiqui.  The river has some great teaching sites where you can learn to ferry, surf, roll and run rapids under the guidance of our Esprit instructors.  After a full day on the river we will visit Chilamate Rainforest Retreat for an Interpretive Rainforest Walk.  The retreat backs onto Braulio Carillo National Park and is an informative and fun way to appreciate the rainforest environment.

Day 3:  Whitewater Canoeing/Kayaking Instruction on the Lower Sarapiqui (B,L,D)

A second day of whitewater instruction!  Today we put our newly developed skills to the test and run the Safari and/or Roble section of the river.  The river is fun, continuous, but manageable for those just starting to paddle.  After our day's accomplishments we will take in more local sights such as the local serpentarium, Lower Sarapiqui Boat Safari, or learn about organic chocolate production...with sampling every step along the way!

Day 4:  Whitewater Rafting on the Pacuare River (B,L,D)

The most famous river for rafting in Costa Rica is the Pacuare.  This 2 day trip is filled with continuous class 3-4 rapids, canyons, wildlife and cuts a swath through truly virgin rainforest.  Our overnight camp is located on a hillside on the bank of the river affording beautiful views of the river and jungle.  Soak up the sights and sounds of the forest in this truly remrkable location.

Day 5:  Whitewater Rafting on the Pacuare River (B,L)

We continue our descent of the Pacuare River through the poweful and challenging Huacas Rapids, Cimerones, and Dos Montanas Canyon.  Don't forget to look around and marvel in the river's  tropical beauty.  With luck we may spot animals and birdlife in the wild such as monkeys, sloth, toucans and macaws.  From the take out we will "road trip" to the Caribbean Coast for our "Surf Camp" and some well deserved "Beach TIme".  Dinner is "on your own" to choose and explore the best of "caribbean fare".

Day 6: Surfing Camp and Beach Time (B)

We start our day with morning surfing lessons .  Expert instruction, quality equipment and just the right conditions combine to make learning to surf really fun!  The mid day is free to explore the local town, grab a bite to eat and kick back soaking in the sun, sand and Caribbean vibe.  In the afternoon we are back at it for another round of surfing lessons.  Dinner is on your own at your restaurant of choice.

Day 7:  Surf, Sloths, and Sarapiqui (B,D)

Our final surf lessons get our day started.  After lunch we will start our trek back to Sarapiqui stoppin en route at a Sloth Sanctuary that specializes in the Rescue, Research and Rehabilitation of these amazing and unique animals.  We stop at the home of local friends for a typical home cooked meal and to see what "real" rural village life is like.

Day 8:  Return to San Jose for Departure of Further Travels. (B)

Early morning transfer back to San Jose for departure.
